How we check prices and verify listings
Every price on ToolForTheTask comes from the vendor's own pricing page, saved as a dated snapshot, and every listing shows the date we checked it. When a vendor publishes no price, we say “Contact for pricing” instead of guessing.
“ToolForTheTask lists 429 small-business AI tools; 161 publish no public price (Oct 15, 2026).” · “Every price links to the vendor's own pricing page and shows the date we checked it.”

What the byline means
“ToolForTheTask Editorial” is a team byline. No single named person writes our guides, so this page is where the byline points: it explains exactly how the information was gathered.
Who approves publishing
Nothing is published, on the site or in the newsletter, without the approval of the site's owner (see About).
How we check a price
- Fetch the vendor's homepage and pricing page and save a snapshot. Each listing stores its source URLs with the time they were retrieved (429 of 429 listings have saved sources).
- Record the lowest published entry plan, its unit (per month, per user, per report…) and the billing basis, plus the pricing page URL.
- Record free plans and free trials separately. A $0 starting price means a free plan (57 tools), shown apart from paid entry prices.
- A second check (Cite Check) re-reads the snapshot before a price appears in a guide.
- Re-check on a schedule. Every listing is re-checked monthly, and within 5 business days of a correction request. The “checked on” date on each listing shows when it was last verified.
See an example: Clio shows its price, the date checked and the sources we saved.
When a vendor publishes no price
- We write “Contact for pricing” and link the vendor's pricing page.
- We never estimate a price or use third-party price claims.
- Contact-for-pricing tools are left out of every price range, median and stack total, and we say so under the table.
- How many: 161 of the 429 tools we list publish no public price (as of Oct 15, 2026). This number is generated from our dataset each time the site is built.
What “listed” and “verified” mean
Each listing is built from the vendor's own pages: a one-line description, the jobs it does, integrations the vendor names, and a pricing summary. Every listing keeps its saved sources and retrieval times. “Checked on” is the date we last compared the listing with those pages.
Listings are compiled by our research tooling from the saved snapshots; individual listings have not yet been individually reviewed by a person. Prices that appear in a guide are confirmed against the snapshot by Cite Check first.
HIPAA and BAA statements
For healthcare tools we report what the vendor's site says, with the link and date, in one of three ways: BAA mentioned, says HIPAA compliant, no BAA language found, or no statement found. Currently: 16 BAA mentioned, 27 HIPAA claimed without BAA language, 21 no statement found.
We never certify compliance. Ask the vendor for a signed BAA before you put patient data into any tool.
How we make money, and what it can't buy
- Sponsored placements are labeled “Ad” with the advertiser named. Affiliate links are disclosed before the first one on a page or in an issue.
- Sponsors never change editorial order or wording. Listings are free.
- Our parent company, Capital Edge, sells setup services; its house ads are labeled.
How we count ad clicks
Advertisers are billed on verified human clicks only. Every click on a sponsored link goes through our own redirect (/go/…), which logs it and then sends the visitor on. Each click is checked against the rules below; if any rule fires, the click is marked likely_bot with the reason, and it is reported but not billed.
- Known scanners and preview fetchers. User agents of email-security link scanners (for example Microsoft Defender Safe Links, Proofpoint, Mimecast, Barracuda), link-preview bots, crawlers and HTTP libraries.
- Data-center networks. Clicks from cloud and hosting networks (for example AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure), identified by the network's ASN and by the providers' own published IP-range lists, which we refresh regularly.
- Too fast after a send. Every newsletter link carries the issue id (
?i=<issue-id>), and each issue's send time is logged. A click less than 10 seconds after that issue was sent (or before it was sent, such as a test send) is treated as a machine scan. - Burst clicking. One visitor fingerprint opening most or all links in an issue within a few seconds (by default 4 or more distinct links within 20 seconds, or 80% of an issue's links if fewer). All clicks in the burst are flagged, including the earlier ones.
- Headless and automated browsers. Headless-browser signatures (such as HeadlessChrome), requests missing headers every real browser sends, and Cloudflare bot signals when available.
What we store: time, link, placement, page, referrer type, issue id, network number (ASN), the bot flag and reason, and a visitor fingerprint. The fingerprint is a keyed hash of the IP address and browser string using a random key that changes every day and is deleted after two days, so it can't be reversed or linked across days. We never store IP addresses, browser strings, cookies or email addresses with clicks.
Billing rule: 1 human click per visitor per link per day. A human click is one not marked likely_bot; repeat clicks by the same visitor fingerprint on the same link on the same day count once. Advertiser reports show total, human and flagged clicks per link and per sponsor, with the reasons for flagged clicks.
Limits: no filter is perfect. A person browsing through a cloud VPN or corporate proxy can be flagged and not billed, and a scanner that imitates a normal browser from a home network can be missed. We publish the rules rather than an accuracy figure.
